From Summit - Henderson Cemetery   Compiled by Knox County Genealogical Society
Mumphrey, Henry
A Georgia mulatto slave, who had sold for $700.00 at auction, entered the Union lines, prior to the battle of Atlanta, and gave valuable information.   He latter became General Sherman's cook, and served to the war's end.   Washington Dunbar of Henderson, who served throughout the war in the 63d Illinois infantry when discharged at Peoria in 1865, brought Mumphrey home and kept him two years.   He then lived with Henry Dunbar's until he died at the age of 88 years and was buried here in 1891.
